Q:Having some trouble with Linux Mint Petra, Had it for a while such that SAI worked, but the tablet didn't have any pressure sensitivity. Wondering if you would be free to give some assistance. I'm more active on Skype, same username. Thanks for your time!
Unfortunately, due to recent changes in my life, I haven’t been using Linux much lately. I’ve been having to work toward new business models for supporting myself that have pushed me back to Windows for the time being. So, unfortunately I’m poorly equipped to help you with your problem right now.
Maybe and hopefully there are some other kind Linux folk out there that can help, but if not I highly recommend a WinXP VM and setting up the VM to use the tablet. This actually provides a decent amount of support for applications such as Sai, even if it’s not the best solution.
Hello! I just got this wonderful tablet for the holidays, and after a few days of digging, I discovered this lovely package. It’s technically for diagnostics, but one of the really nice side-effects of running it is that it enables the tablet’s proprietary mode. With this, I got my new tablet working absolutely flawlessly in every program I’ve tried, even through wine! Hopefully this opens up a whole new range of tablets for linux artists.
Sorry for the quiet lately. Life has been rough for me.
I’m hoping to soon get my hands on a Cintiq Companion. If I do I’ll be installing Ubuntu on it and doing an extensive review on compatibility and usability here.
There is going to be some changes to this blog. I will still be posting info for other artists interested in Linux or that use Linux, but since it’s been overly quiet I’m also going to start posting my SFW art on here as well. I will not be linking to my NSFW work on here at any point, because I want this to be an open resource for as many people, young and old and of varying personal values, as possible.
About the Huion Turcom Tablet
Even though there’s a lot of word going around that this tablet uses a UC-Logic digitizer this does not appear to be the case (even UC says that it’s not the case). Oddly the pens are cross compatible, but the main problem is that since it’s not a UC-Logic digitizer it does not work with the Wacom kernel drivers and therefore whether you’ll be able to get it to work at all is quite unpredictable.
I’ve seen a few people say that they got the touch capable Huion pen tablets to work using the Wizardpen drivers, but I will say that I had no such luck with the non-touch model. So it’s a gamble from model to model as well.
This is likely to change in the future, but for now I’d suggest sticking to the Monoprice if you’re in Linux.
Wine Deb with Paint Tool Sai Patches
As some people were experiencing problems with getting the build method to work in various Ubuntu based linux builds I decided to make a deb package available. You will still need to manually install any Wine dependencies and change the misc.ini in SAI to use WinTab, but this should cut out most of the work for you using distros such as Ubuntu, Xubuntu, or Linux Mint.
If you so choose you may donate to me, use the adfly supported links, or buy my SAI brush and/or paper packs, but this part is completely optional.
If you have any problems at all please feel free to send me an ask.
Getting Paint Tool SAI 1.0.1 to work, with tablet support, in Linux using WINE (revised)
You can run SAI and many other art applications in Linux using a Windows guest in a virtual machine, but sometimes that can feel rather cumbersome or it can perform poorly. So, I decided to offer information on an alternative route.
This only works with SAI 1.0.1 as some of the changes with 1.1.0 make SAI unusable in WINE.
These instructions assume you’re used to building programs from a git. If someone would like to make a more user friendly version of these instructions, please feel free!
git clone git://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git ./wine-1.4.1 cd wine-1.4.1 git reset --hard c6f036f73dd0a652d23bd1a15e4c8519b6903c7c #WINE version 1.4.1 wget http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=39527 #Patch from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11846 wget http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=39528 #Patch from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11846 patch -p1 < attachment.cgi?id=39527 patch -p1 < attachment.cgi?id=39528 ./configure #With your preferred flags make #With your preferred flags sudo make install
So far there have been some odd bugs with my tablet, but your results may vary quite a bit. If I figure out a version of WINE that works better I’ll let people know.
Oh, and as a nice bonus, this fixes tablet support for many applications in general, not just SAI.
Apologies for still not getting back to that post on Sai yet. I’ve been thinking about it, but things have been a bit hectic between moving, my pen for my Wacom tablet dying, and trying to get various projects completed.
In some small news, there is a rather interesting art program I’ve been excited about that is out now, it’s called Hexels. It runs in wine without a hitch, so give it a shot!
